Careers
Framatics is one person and a printer in Atlanta, Georgia, trying to build something that pays the newsrooms whose work it sells. It is early enough that everything below is about what the work is actually like rather than what a careers page usually says.
There are no open roles right now
That is the whole status. The store is a prototype: it is not trading, nothing on it is licensed, and no payment can be taken through it. Until licensing agreements are signed there is no revenue to hire against, and hiring against revenue that does not exist is how small companies hurt people.
When that changes, roles will be posted on this page with a salary range on the listing. Not "competitive". A range.
What working here would actually be like
Small and early means broad roles and a short line between an idea and it shipping. It also means no team to hand things to, no established process, and a real chance the whole thing does not work. Both halves of that are true and you should weigh them together.
The work splits roughly three ways: licensing conversations with publishers and university licensing offices, print and framing production, and the storefront itself.
Speculative applications
Worth sending if you work in one of these, because these are the gaps:
- Licensing. Anyone who has negotiated with a college licensing office, a conference, or a newspaper's rights desk and knows what those agreements actually look like.
- Print and framing production. People who have run archival pigment printing or hand framing at volume, and know where the quality actually goes wrong.
- Sports media and local journalism. Especially anyone who has worked in a newsroom and can say honestly whether the revenue-share idea on the Social Responsibility page is worth anything to the people it is meant to help.
Email framatics.us@gmail.com with what you have done and what you would want to work on. Short is better than a cover letter. There is no application system and no tracker, so if you do not hear back within two weeks, send it again rather than assuming it was a no.
Students and student journalists
Framatics exists partly because student newsrooms cover championships that nobody licenses and nobody pays them for. If you write, shoot or edit for a student publication and want to talk about how that side should work, that is a conversation worth having whether or not there is a job at the end of it.
Same address: framatics.us@gmail.com.
What we will not do
No unpaid internships, and no "exposure" arrangements. If the work is worth doing it is worth paying for, and a company whose entire premise is that journalists should be paid for their work cannot make an exception for the person doing its own.
